After earning a music performance degree from the Cologne Musikhochschule in both oboe and conducting, Michael Helmrath initially pursued a career as an oboist. This led him to the Munich Philharmonic and its conductor Sergiu Celibidache, who recognized and supported Helmrath as a conductor. At the orchestral academy of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Michael Helmrath served as the assistant to conductors such as Sergiu Celibidache, Leonard Bernstein and Yehudi Menuhin. Michael Helmrath has been the General Music Director of the Brandenburger Symphoniker since 2003. He has been invited to perform with orchestras and at opera stages in Germany and abroad (including with the Staatskapelle Dresden, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the China National Orchestra in Beijing). In addition to traditional operatic and symphonic repertoire from the Classical and Romantic periods, Michael Helmrath also has an affinity for New Music and has conducted the premiere performance of many works. Various live radio and television broadcasts as well as CD recordings testify to his artistry as a conductor.
