Stephan Schreckenberger initially studied school music at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. This was followed by vocal concert training with Annemarie Grünewald in Heidelberg and Ernst Gerold Schramm in Berlin. He completed his training with Karl-Heinz Jarius in Frankfurt am Main.

From 1989 to 2005, Schreckenberger was a member of the solo vocal ensemble Cantus Cölln. He has worked internationally, particularly in the field of early music. He has made around 60 CD recordings. He has worked for many years with the conductors Jordi Savall, Sigiswald Kuijken, Masaaki Suzuki, Hermann Max, Konrad Junghänel, Michael Schneider and others.

In 1999, Schreckenberger founded the soloist ensemble "Musica Lingua". Three CDs have been released on the Genuin label to date.

From 2003, he supervised singers and vocal ensembles for 15 years within the Department of Historical Interpretation Practice at the Frankfurt University of Music. This work gave rise to the "Ensemble Hochmusik", an instrumental and vocal ensemble based in Frankfurt.

He has been the director of the Weilburger Schlosskonzerte since the 2011 season.
