Robbert van Steijn (principal conductor) studied piano and orchestral conducting in Utrecht and Amsterdam. In 1994 he was engaged at the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau as a répétiteur. From 1997–2000 he was conductor at the Hoofdstad Operetta Amsterdam and was musical director of the national musical tour productions for Stage Entertainment in 2002/2003 and 2008/2009.
For ten years he worked as assistant conductor, musical director, and choir director at the Nederlandse Reisopera and as an assistant at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam. In 2011 he served as assistant music director at the Bayreuth Festival. Between 2012 and 2016 he was engaged as principal conductor of the Staatskapelle Halle. He has been chief conductor and general music director of the Leipziger Symphonieorchester since September 2021.
