Georg Zeike
Viola da gamba
Georg Zeike grew up in a family of church musicians and began learning to play the cello at eleven. He studied this instrument and viola da gamba and baroque cello at the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig. As a freelance gambist and cellist, he is an enthusiastic basso continuo player. Also, he performs solo arias in oratorios and cantatas as well as baroque chamber music on original instruments.
Georg Zeike teaches adults and children how to play the cello, baroque cello, and viola da gamba. From 2010–2018 he directed the music theater Das musikalische Fabularium together with soprano Christiane Wiese. With this, he traveled around Germany and has been engaged several times at the Leipzig Bach Festival with two commissioned works.
Radio and CD recordings and concerts with various ensembles throughout Europe complement his musical work. As solo cellist of the Leipziger Kammerorchester under Morten Schuldt-Jensen, he regularly plays in Copenhagen. He has repeatedly been a guest soloist and continuo cellist in productions of Bach’s Passions with the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra.
As a cellist and founding member of the ensemble Himmelpfortgrund, he devotes himself to the classical and romantic chamber music repertoire of Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and others on period instruments. This has resulted in radio productions and CDs featuring Franz Schubert’s Octet in F major, D 803 and Conradin Kreutzer’s Septet in E-flat major, Op. 62.
Since 2020, Georg Zeike has been a member of Capella Fidicinia Leipzig, and is in charge of concert programs for viola da gamba consort.
