Orchestra conductor, music educator, festival director – Johannes Klumpp has made a name for himself in many areas since his initial success in competitions as a rising talent on the podium. The conductor, who learned his trade in Weimar, first attracted international attention in 2007 at the conducting competition Besançon. Awards followed at the German University Competition “in memoriam Herbert von Karajan” as well as the German Conductors’ Award in 2011.

An active concert career regularly takes Klumpp to the podium of renowned orchestras. In addition to the artistic direction of the "SummerMusicAcademy Hundisburg Castle", a position he has held since 2013, he took up his new post as artistic director of the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra at the start of the 2020/2021 season.

Klumpp has been chief conductor and artistic director of the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra Essen since the 2013/2014 season. The focus of his work has been on the oeuvre of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Thanks to recordings of Mozart’s symphonies and concertos, which have earned acclaim from critics, Klumpp greatly increased the awareness and profile of the ensemble.
