Dynamically-charged concerts, compelling programs, and musical excellence have been the hallmarks of the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra Essen for sixty-four years. In its concerts, the young, international ensemble under the direction of chief conductor Johannes Klumpp explores new horizons and experiments with different concert forms, genres, and styles, with other art forms regularly combined with music in their performances.

In addition to early music – expertly led by world-class specialists in this field – the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are another of their focuses. The ensemble has continuously expanded and consolidated its expertise in Mozart in recent years and, with its lively, fresh, bold, and devoted playing, is among the leading interpreters in this field.

Team spirit, freshness, and irrepressible joy of playing characterize the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra Essen, making it an ideal environment for young guest artists as well as rising conductors. The individual ensemble members themselves also regularly demonstrate their outstanding artistic qualities in solo appearances during the concerts.

In addition to youth work including open rehearsals, family and generational concerts, a key pillar of the orchestra’s profile is communication between the orchestra and audience: lecture-concerts, artist interviews, informative moderation, and workshops enable new listening experiences and provide diverse insights into the process of creating a concert.
