Baritone Christian Rieger, born in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, Germany, studied voice at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich with Adalbert Kraus and Peter Kertz, following training as a baker and pastry chef and an extended stay in the U.S., and won the Richard Strauss Voice Competition in 1992. He gave his opera debut in 1994 as Dandini (La Cenerentola) at the Oldenburg State Theater. In 1995 he became a member of the Ensemble of the Baden State Theater Karlsruhe, where he sang roles including Escamillo, Graf Almaviva, Don Giovanni, and Lescaut. Since 2003 Christian Rieger has been a member of the Bavarian State Opera, building a wide repertoire that ranges from Monteverdi and Handel to Nyman and Eötvös. In 2007 he won the Prize for Outstanding Achievement at the Munich Opera Festival. He has created numerous roles in premieres and works by Zimmermann, Schoenberg, and Henze, and is also a composer himself.
