The Staatskapelle Weimar can look back on a history spanning more than five hundred years; one with which major musical figures, such as Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Franz Liszt and Richard Strauss, have been associated. Several orchestral works and operas, including Wagner’s Lohengrin and Humperdinck’s Hänsel and Gretel, were premiered by the former court orchestra.
Today, in its concert and opera program, the orchestra focuses on combining innovation with the conscious preservation of its great tradition. Diverse CD recordings reflect the varied, ever-expanding repertoire which extends from Mozart to Liszt, Wagner, Strauss and Furtwängler to contemporary composers. In demand at home and abroad as a first-class orchestra, the Staatskapelle Weimar regularly works with world-renowned soloists and conductors.
