clair-obscur

Artist photo of clair-obscur - Saxophone Quartet

Clair-obscur is a classical saxophone quartet that models itself along the lines of the string quartet. Accordingly, the four saxophonists completed their chamber music studies at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin with Friedemann Weigle, the violist of the Artemis Quartet. Musical relevance, rather than technical ease on the saxophone, is the only thing that matters for the quartet. This aspiration has lead to clair-obscur’s success; seen in the numerous prizes they have received at international competitions. Rarely do saxophones sound so colorful, differentiated, filigree and sonorous. Clair-obscur approaches a wide range of musical styles and concert forms with the same demand for perfection as in classical music. For their theatrical performances and children's concerts, they have taken speech and drama classes and have worked together with stage directors. The musicians of clair-obsur teach at various universities, passing on their knowledge in international master classes. They regularly make guest appearances with leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic. Their concert engagements have taken them to some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Residence Theater in Munich and the Chamber Music Hall of the Berliner Philharmonie.
