Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie

They are between eleven and twenty years old and are already performing on the world’s major stages. They appear regularly in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, the Cologne Philharmonie, at the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival, the Dresden Music Festival, and the Young Euro Classic in
Berlin.

The orchestra members of the Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie impress audiences with their outstanding playing and inspire with a very special, collaborative atmosphere on stage. Instructors from the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra work intensively with the individual orchestra sections, which shapes the ensemble’s characteristic, exceptionally uniform string sound.

The orchestra was founded in East Berlin in 1973 as the Radio Music School Orchestra of the GDR under the direction of Helmut Koch. It has been sponsored by the Association of German Music Schools since 1991 and brings together the brightest string talents from music schools throughout Germany. Other distinguished conductors followed Koch, with Wolfgang Hentrich taking over the baton from Michael Sanderling in 2013.

The orchestra also works with internationally acclaimed conductors such as Marek Janowski and Vladimir Jurowski, with shooting star maestro Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, with renowned instrumental virtuosos such as Julia Fischer and Daniel Hope, and with exceptional young talents such as María Dueñas and the brothers Arthur and Lucas Jussen. The year 2021 was particularly marked by the ensemble’s collaboration with its first artist in residence, the outstanding percussionist Alexej Gerassimez.

The young elite ensemble also creates lasting impressions on its tours to neighboring and faraway countries, from Denmark to Ecuador. The annual concerts with pianist SoRyang at the Vienna Musikverein have become a favorite tradition.

Offering a possibility of intensive musical education for young people, the Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie is a veritable talent factory for qualified young professional musicians on the way to joining top orchestras and launching solo careers. Many former members perform in well-known orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra New York.

The Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie is supported by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth.
