Renatus Mészár

Renatus Mészár was born in Laubach in Hesse. He received his first musical training at the piano and as a member of the boys' choir in his hometown. After graduating from high school, Renatus Mészár first studied church music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg (HfMT) before devoting himself entirely to singing. His teachers at the HfMT and the University of Music and Theatre Munich were Annie Schoonus and Brigitte Fassbaender, and later Irmgard Hartmann-Dressler. He made his opera debut at the Munich Biennale while still a student.

The focus of his work is the roles of Richard Wagner (Wotan/Wanderer, Hans Sachs, The Dutchman, Amfortas, Klingsor, etc.). But other major roles in his voice category such as Boris Godunov, Zaccaria (Nabucco), Filippo (Don Carlo), and Golaud (Pelléas et Mélisande) are also part of his repertoire. In addition, he has given important first performances and premieres – a total of about eighty roles.

The winner of international singing competitions, he has performed these roles at many German and international opera houses (Gärtnerplatz Theatre Munich, Volksoper Wien, Hungarian State Opera, Mannheim National Theater, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Hamburg State Opera, and many more).

In addition to his career as an opera singer, Renatus Mészár has built up an extensive concert repertoire which ranges from Monteverdi to current contemporary music, and also includes a wide variety of lied recital programs.

Numerous recordings for radio, television, CD, and DVD document his versatility.
