Gordon Kampe

After training as an electrician, Gordon Kampe studied composition with Hans-Joachim Hespos, Adriana Hölszky, and Nicolaus A. Huber. He also studied musicology
and history in Bochum. Kampe has won many awards, including the Stuttgart Composition Prize (2007 and 2011), Ernst von Siemens Music Prize (2016), Rome Prize of the Villa Massimo, and Schneider-Schott Music Prize (2016).

He has received grants from the Berlin Academy of Arts and fellowships at the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris and the Villa Concordia in Bamberg, among others. He has been Professor of Composition at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater since 2017 and a member of the Free Academy of Arts Hamburg since 2019.

One of the focuses of his work has been music theater, with genres ranging from experimental forms and play development, installations, and live audio plays to musical theater for children and opera. His works have been performed at the Donaueschingen Festival, Ultraschall Berlin, ECLAT Festival for New Music Stuttgart, Warsaw Autumn, Witten Days for New Chamber Music, Stuttgart State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Mainz and Hanover state theaters, and Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Kampe is also active as an author of columns on musical and cultural policy.
