Nikolay Borchev
Baritone
Nikolay Borchev was born in Pinsk, Belarus and began his musical training at the age of seven with lessons in piano, flute, and organ in Moscow. After turning sixteen, he studied voice at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Pavel Lisitsian and Maria Arya, and afterward at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin with Heinz Reeh, Julia Varady, and Wolfram Rieger. He is the winner of several prizes at international vocal competitions. At a very young age he became an ensemble member of the Bavarian State Opera, before moving on—also as an ensemble member—to the Vienna State Opera. With his wide-ranging repertoire spanning Baroque to contemporary music, he has also been a welcome guest on all the major international stages, including the Deutsche Oper, Staatsoper Berlin, Royal Opera House in London, Palau de les Arts in Valencia, Staatsoper Hamburg, and Glyndebourne Festival Opera. The versatile artist is highly committed to performing concerts and song recitals, which feature prominently in his musical career alongside his operatic engagements. Borchev presents exquisite programs at such venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, Musikverein Wien, Berliner Philharmonie, and at festivals including those in Baden-Baden and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
