Elena Gaponenko was born into a family of musicians and began playing two instruments, piano and cello, at the age of four. From the beginning she received professional training in both disciplines, first in Moscow, at the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory and later at the Music School of Gnessiny.
She then continued her studies at the universities of music in Detmold and Cologne and at the Hoogeschool for Music Zuid Maastricht (Netherlands). Elena Gaponenko completed her studies by receiving her concert diploma in both piano and violoncello with distinction. On both instruments she has been a laureate of numerous international competitions and, as a scholar, has received grants by the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Organization and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. She made her first appearance with an orchestra at age nine. In addition to her teaching activities at various music schools she performs concerts throughout Europe, both as a soloist and as a chamber music partner.
