Born in New York in 1960, Brian Dean studied violin and Baroque violin at the Oberlin Conservatory and earned a solo performance degree at Rice University in Houston, Texas under Sergiu Luca (Galamian technique). After completing his studies he came to Europe, where he specialized in Baroque, Classical, and Romantic period performance practice.
Today, he works primarily as a concertmaster and director of renowned ensembles throughout Europe. For example, he is concertmaster of the Belgian orchestra Anima Eterna (conductor: Jos van Immerseel), a permanent member of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, and concertmaster of the Collegium Musicum Lucerne, and also frequently leads orchestras as guest concertmaster. In addition, he performs as a soloist and chamber musician, and is a visiting lecturer at festivals and universities in Europe and throughout the world.
Brian Dean teaches violin, Baroque violin and period performance practice at the Lucerne School of Music. In the fall of 2009 he founded and now directs the Chamber Academy Basel at the School of Music of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland.
