Kai Wessel, born in Hamburg, studied music theory, composition and singing in Lübeck and baroque performance practice in Basel and Hilversum. He has received several awards and scholarships, including scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Guest appearances at operas have taken him to Barcelona, Madrid, Hannover, Stuttgart, Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Karlsruhe, Halle, Göttingen, Vienna, Salzburg, Amsterdam and Basel. Next to his numerous roles in the baroque repertoire, including the title role in Giulio Cesare, Bertarido in Rodelinda and Orfeo in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, he sang in premiere performances of operas by Klaus Huber, Isabel Mundry, Salvatore Sciarrino, Georg Friedrich Haas, Jörg Widmann and other composers under the direction of Ph. Herreweghe, N. Harnoncourt, G. Leonhard, J. Savall, T. Koopman, R. Goebel, H. Max, M. Haselböck, S. Cambreling, K. Nagano, and H. -W. Henze. Over 90 CD-recordings document his career. Between 2006 and 2012, Kai Wessel taught at the Konservatorium Wien University and is currently a professor of singing and historical performance practice in Cologne as well as a professor of singing with focus on contemporary vocal literature in Berne. Next to his work as a vocal soloist, Kai Wessel is also active as a conductor of operas and oratorios.
