Walter Hilgers is permanent Guest Conductor and Honorary Artistic Director of the “Paul Constantinescu“Philharmonic Orchestra Ploieşti since 2016. From 2007 until 2014 he was the Principal Guest Conductor of the Banatul State Philharmonic Orchestra in Timişoara and from 2017 to 2020 the Chief Conductor of the Santa Fe Province Symphony Orchestra in Argentina.

Guest conducting engagements have taken him among others to the Philharmonic Orchestra Montevideo, the SODRE Symphony Orchestra Montevideo, the National Orchestra Buenos Aires, the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Teatro Argentino in La Plata, the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra, the Radio Chamber Orchestra Bucharest, the Radio Symphony Orchestra Bucharest, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra Bucharest, the State Philharmonic Orchestra Košice, the Philharmonic Orchestra Zagreb, the Philharmonic Orchestra Nice, the St. Petersburg State Academic Capella Orchestra, the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt, the Munich Radio Orchestra and the Orchestra of the National Theatre Mannheim.

Furthermore, he has conducted chamber concerts at the Bavarian State Orchestra Munich, the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg, the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, the Mecklenburg State Orchestra Schwerin, the Philharmonic Orchestra Qatar, the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Symphony Orchestra of Valencia.

Born in Stolberg/Rhineland, Walter Hilgers received his instrumental education in the subjects tuba, double bass and piano at the Cologne University of Music and Dance, department Aachen.

Engagements as a tuba player have taken him to the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival and the Vienna Philharmonic. He made music among others under Herbert von Karajan, Lorin Maazel, Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Andre Previn, Pierre Boulez, Georg Solti, James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, Riccardo Muti, Bernhard Haitink and Günter Wand.

Walter Hilgers was a founding member of the German Brass ensemble, and he played with this ensemble from 1984 to 2007.

His international teaching and concert activities as soloist, chamber musician and conductor have led him to most European countries as well as U.S.A., Latin America, Australia and Asia.
