Simon Gaudenz is considered one of Europe’s most promising young conductors. He has appeared in concert with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Orchestre National de France, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, the Russian National Philharmonic, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and many other orchestras.
In 2009 he was awarded the Deutscher Dirigentenpreis, one of the most prestigious and most generous competition prizes in Europe and was honored for the third time and also recognized by the Swiss cultural foundation Aargauer Kuratorium with an Artistic Achievement Award. In addition, he has won First Prize at the Gennady Rozhdestvensky International Conducting Competition (2006), a scholarship from the “Akademie Musiktheater Heute” of the Deutsche Bank (2005) and was a cash stipend recipient with the German Dirigentenforum’s “Maestros von Morgen” of the German Music Council (2004 – 2009).
Since 2004 Simon Gaudenz has led the Collegium Musicum Basel as its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, and since the beginning of the 2010/11 season has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Odense Symphony Orchestra. He made his opera debut in 2003 in Freiburg conducting Honegger’s Aventures du Roi Pausole followed by Strauss’s Nacht in Venedig and Verdi’s La Traviata. Numerous tours, appearances at festivals, CD and radio recordings round off his extensive artistic work. Simon Gaudenz majored in clarinet performance, composition and conducting in Lucerne, Graz, Freiburg and Salzburg, and has received additional important insights through collaboration with Leon Fleisher, Kurt Masur, David Zinman and Eliahu Inbal. His interest in period performance practice was supported by Reinhard Goebel and Arnold Östman.
