Julian Arp

Julian Arp is one of the last generations of students of the renowned cellist Boris Pergamenschikow. His suggestion to focus not only on the smallest musical details but also on the context of the respective work, such as in visual arts or literature, resonated strongly with Julian Arp.

Born in the German town of Soltau in Lower Saxony, this cellist and passionate photographer displays a keen eye for form, structure, and the finest nuances, both on the instrument and behind the camera. The years of intensive collaboration at the International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove with György Kurtág, Ferenc Rados and Steven Isserlis have had a tremendous artistic influence on him to this day.

He studied with David Geringas at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin, where he also completed formative chamber music studies with Eberhard Feltz. In this field, one of his artistic focal points crystallized, encouraged by his collaboration with musicians such as András Schiff and Elisabeth Leonskaja. With his long-time duo partner Caspar Frantz, he has won several first prizes at national and international competitions.

In 2009 they focused on Mendelssohn Bartholdy with a highly acclaimed recording of his complete works for cello and piano. The album Time isn’t passing, released in 2013, spans the spectrum from Johann Sebastian Bach to György Kurtág. As a soloist and chamber musician, Julian Arp dedicates himself to a broad repertoire from the Baroque to the present, with New Music at the heart of his musical exploration. Composers such as Violetta Dinescu, Sarah Nemtsov, Helena Winkelman, Sven-Ingo Koch, Samir Odeh-Tamimi and Marcelo Nisinman have written pieces for him, which he has premiered.

In addition to his worldwide concert activity in halls such as the Philharmonie Berlin, Carnegie Hall New York, Wigmore Hall London and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, teaching is just as much a part of his everyday artistic life. In 2013 he was appointed professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz.

He lives with his wife and four children in an old farmhouse between Vienna and Graz. Julian Arp plays on a cello made especially for him by Stephan von Baehr in Paris in 2010 and modeled on the Stradivari Stauffer Ex Christiani 1700.
