Johannes Unger
Organ
Johannes Unger was born in 1976 in Germany in Schlema, Saxony. He studied piano, organ and completed the A Examination for Church Music from the “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Leipzig and took part in the Solo Performance Class at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Denmark. His teachers have included Ullrich Böhme, Hans Fagius, and Markus Tomas. In 1998, as the youngest participant, he won First Prize in the prestigious International Organ Competition in Odense, Denmark. In the Bach anniversary year 2000 he won the 12th International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig as well as First Prize in the Interpretation Competition of the 21st International Organ Festival at St Albans, England. He has performed on concert tours throughout Europe, Australia, and the U.S.
Since September 2003 he has been Assistant Organist at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. He has made recordings on the Silbermann organ of the Georgenkirche in Rötha, Germany and on the Sauer organ of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. He heads the group of sponsors supporting the organ building campaign at Leipzig’s Peterskirche and is organist at the Thüringischer Akademischer Singkreis
