Reinhold-Quartett
The Reinhold-Quartett, which consists of players in the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Leipzig, was founded in 1996 with the desire to concertize together and travel their own musical path. They received important encouragement from Professor Karl Suske and Professor Thomas Brandis. In 1997 the Reinhold Quartet opened the 2nd International ‘Mendelssohn-Kolloquium’ and was invited to perform for several live productions and studio recordings at MDR (Central German Broadcasting). In this way, over the past few years, several hours of string quartet repertoire have been recorded for the archives and on compact disc. In addition to successful concerts at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig and the Semper Opera in Dresden, the quartet has appeared in concert throughout Germany and abroad. High points include concerts in Spain, a Leos Janácek cycle in Prague and performing in the historical Edvard Grieg House in Bergen, Norway. In November 2002 their debut CD on the “Querstand” label in performances of works by Bruckner, Haydn and Dvorák met with wide acclaim.
The idea of releasing these works on the present CD resulted from a concert we performed at the Internationale Mendelssohnfesttage in November 2004 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. “Mendelssohn and England” was the theme of the festival organized by the Gewandhaus and the International Mendelssohn Foundation. The festival program featured string quartets not only by Mendelssohn, but also by Maxwell Davies and Elgar as well. Our contact with Wiebke Busch of Chester Music in Berlin and her expert advice introduced us to the work of Judith Weir, thus broadening and rounding out our exposure to British string quartet writing. The fact that Peter Maxwell Davies was born in the year of Edward Elgar’s death has, over and above biographical coincidence, substantial significance for the dramatic sequence chosen for the works on this disc. It may be added that Judith Weir’s popularity exemplifies the emancipation of outstanding female composers in the world of classical music which for decades has been a matter of course in Great Britain.
