GENUIN pianist Yekwon Sunwoo, from South Korea, won this year's Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. The 28-year-old placed first on Saturday night among the six finalists. The first prize is $ 50,000, as well as concerts and CD recordings.
Of the 290 pianists who had applied to the Fifteenth Cliburn piano competition, 141 proceeded to the first round. From this first round, 30 artists from 16 countries between the age of 18 and 30 qualified to participate. The competition has been organized every four years since 1962. It was named after the American pianist Van Cliburn (1934-2013) who, with his victory at the 1954 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, became a national hero in his homeland.
