Contrabassist Wies de Boevé wins the 2016 ARD International Music Competition
Wies de Boevé confidently won this year's 65th ARD International Music Competition. Both the 1st Prize and the Audience Award went to the Belgian bassist, born in 1987. He gave a convincing interpretation of Nino Rota's Divertimento Concertante for double bass and orchestra. The ARD Music Competition 2016 is being held in the disciplines of bass, horn, harp and string quartet from August 29 to September 16, 2016, in Munich.
Wies de Boevé had already won 1st prize at the German Music Competition in Bonn in 2015 – the first double bass player in the more than 40-year history of this competition! Moreover, he is the prizewinner of numerous other competitions, including the Scottish International Double Bass Competition in Glasgow and the Concours International de Contrebasse in Paris. He has played with renowned orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, and other major ensembles. Since 2015, Wies de Boevé has been deputy principal bassist in Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
His debut CD, featuring original music for double bass and piano by Gliere, Giovanni Bottesini, Joseph Jongen, Teppo Hauta-aho and Astor Pizzolla, will be commercially available on 7 October, appearing as a part of GENUIN classics' Edition Primavera.
