Jury awards the extensive compiled legacy of the "virtuostically gripping and poetically sensitive pianist"
Released in November 2015, GENUIN classics' "Dinorah Varsi Legacy" box has been awarded the Quarterly Critics' Choice 1/2016 in the category "Keyboard Instruments" of the German Record Critics' Award. In their decision, the jury stated the following:
Lovingly prepared, the Genuin label presents the legacy of a significant pianist. Dinorah Varsi shined with enchantingly honest piano performances of music from Rameau to Rachmaninov. Born in Uruguay in 1939, the pianist made a career in the late sixties without ever becoming a ‘star’ after receiving numerous prizes at major competitions. From the first recordings of the six-year-old in 1945 to a live concert recording in Japan from 2004, everyone can now hear just how much of a brilliant, virtuostically gripping and poetically sensitive pianist she was thanks to this anthology. Dinorah Varsi had much to express through her subtle articulation. Her piano playing was characterized by autonomy as well as clarity. (Writing for the jury: Gregor Willmes)
The jury of the prize consists of independent music journalists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and is as heterogeneous as the range of music genres and productions for the spoken word. For each jury, five experts evaluate and recommend the best new productions on the market for recorded music.
Apart from the German Record Critics' Award, the comprehensive edition, which documents the artistic work of the Uruguayan pianist Dinorah Varsi (1939-2013) from 1945-2004, also received the ICMA Special Award 2016. The award ceremony of the ICMA will be followed by a gala concert by the Basque National Orchestra Orquestra de Euskadi in San Sebastian under the direction of Jun Märkl on 1 April 2016.
