A breath of life
Music for recorder quartet
Not only the program of Quartet New Generation’s new GENUIN disc moves between the world we know and the shadow realm. The sounds elicited by the award-winning recorder ensemble from the up to 20 different instruments also seem to originate in wholly other spheres. The four young women oscillate between pointillist tone painting and white deserts, paint Bruckner’s choir setting onto gossamer stained glass and etch Gordon Beeferman’s Passagen into gleaming metal. From Dorothée Hahne’s Dance macabre until the final breath of what was perhaps Johann Sebastian Bach’s last fugue: the choice of programming and performances heard on the CD are outstanding and repeatedly make you catch your breath with their intensity. Words will not suffice—listen for yourself!
"One can hardly express it otherwise: these are four fantastic musicians ... neither the most difficult passages nor the sometimes noise-like or percussively unfolding formal developments of these pieces present any challenges to the virtuosity, accuracy, balance of tone and interpretative prowess of the four musicians."
