There is probably no other music that arouses more associations with passion and temperament, but at the same time just as many clichés, as the tango. Its erotismo and its often subtle longing for death have made it the theme music for innumerable films and the king of all dancing courses. Under these circumstances, developing your own interpretation is not easy. The wonderful renditions by Berlin duo “cello project,” consisting of Eckart Runge (cello) and Jacques Ammon (piano), has done just that with unconventional arrangements and new interpretations of well-known classics. The duo harks all the way back to the roots of Argentinian tango, they breathe life into performances of such popular repertoire works as “El Choclo” by Angel Villoldo or “El dia que me quieras” by Carlos Gardel. With technical brilliance, classical dance rhythms interact with the occasionally off-the-wall, sometimes fugue-like elements of tango nuevo. Two pieces from Piazzolla’ “El Angel” cycle dwell on the theme of winged heavenly beings. These delightful works will enchant listening audiences!
